Why I built HomeEdCafe

HomeEdCafe first began as HomeEdUK. At the time, the idea was simple: to create a practical place for home educating families in the UK to keep learning records, notes and summaries organised.

But it quickly became clear that home education is not just a UK conversation. There are homeschooling parents and families all around the world who face similar challenges, ask similar questions and need somewhere friendly to share ideas, support each other and feel part of something.

That is why HomeEdUK has now grown into HomeEdCafe.

The new name and fresh look are about making the site feel more open, welcoming and community-focused. A cafe is somewhere people come together, talk, share ideas and help each other - and that is exactly what I want this community to become.

My eldest son, who is now 15, was struggling at school. He was dealing with bullying, anxiety, and simply wasn't coping with day-to-day life in that environment. Watching that as a parent is incredibly hard.

So I made the decision to take him out of school and start homeschooling, hoping to give him a more comfortable and supportive environment.

One thing I quickly realised was just how useful it can be to keep records - learning logs, notes, or summaries if you ever need them.

The problem? Writing things down here and there just doesn't work. Things get missed, forgotten, or never written at all.

So I did what I've always done... I built something.

A simple, practical system where I could log learning, keep everything organised, and generate clean summaries whenever I wanted.

Then it hit me - I can't be the only parent dealing with this.

And that is where the idea grew. HomeEdCafe is not just for me, and it is not just about keeping logs. It is for other families who want something straightforward that actually works, while also having a place to connect with others.

Important: Learning logs and summaries remain private to each member. They are there for your own records and organisation. They are not public, and they do not represent any requirement or expectation from local authorities.

A more open community

With this updated version of HomeEdCafe, the aim is to open up the rest of the site for interaction. Members can share posts, ask questions, comment, reply, post useful resources, write blogs and help each other through the everyday ups and downs of home education.

The private tools stay private. Your learning logs and summaries are for you.

The community areas are there so everyone can be part of the wider conversation, whether you are just starting out, have been home educating for years, or are simply looking for ideas, reassurance or support.

No fluff. No overcomplication. Just a friendly space with practical tools and a community built around helping each other.

I'm Steve

I'm a single parent and have been since my youngest son was just 3 months old - he's now 13. Life hasn't exactly been the easiest journey, but like most parents, you just keep going and do your best every day.

For over 30 years, I worked in the vehicle recovery industry as a heavy rescue specialist. It was more than just a job - it was my life. But in January 2025, due to health reasons, I had to make the tough decision to close my business.

Alongside that, I've always had a passion for web development. What started as a hobby grew into something much bigger, and I'm now a certified PHP developer. My main development work lives at StreamCode Studio.

I also run a 70s & 80s online radio station called XperienceRewind. It's been running for nearly 20 years - so if you enjoy a bit of nostalgia, great music, and a proper throwback vibe, you'll feel right at home there.

Thank you

If HomeEdCafe helps you even a little bit, then it's done exactly what I hoped it would.

And if you ever fancy a break from the paperwork, feel free to stick on XperienceRewind - a bit of 70s & 80s music makes everything better.

Got ideas or features you'd love to see added? I'd genuinely love to hear them. Drop me an email at stevieboy153@hotmail.com and I'll see what I can do.

Thank you,
Steve
