Getting ready this morning to head off to a caravan for the night. :)
I'll try and get some pictures while we're there if I remember!
Hopefully we'll have a nice chilled out weekend, and fingers crossed the weather decides to behave itself for a change.
Anyone else got any plans for the weekend?

Hello everyone

I've recently joined and started using the journal entries. I spent most of yesterday evening adding as much as I could remember, and I have to say I think it's fantastic.

As for today, I think it's going to be a relaxed day for me and the kids. No big plans, no schedules, just a chance for them to play, unwind and enjoy themselves for a while. Sometimes those quieter days are just as important as the busy learning days!

Hope everyone has a lovely day.

This morning didn't quite go to plan as my youngest daughter, Emily, wasn't feeling very well.

Rather than disrupting the day for Amelia and Harrison, I decided to turn it into a learning opportunity and set up a little doctors and nurses role-play game. They took their jobs very seriously!

They spent the morning checking Emily's temperature, making sure she had water, keeping her comfortable and asking how she was feeling. We also talked about symptoms and looked up what might be causing them, along with how to care for someone when they're unwell.

What started as an unexpected change to our day turned into a wonderful lesson in empathy, responsibility and basic health care.

One of the things I love most about home education is how learning can happen naturally, even on the days when everything goes off schedule.

Aww bless her, I hope Emily is feeling much better now <3 It sounds like Amelia and Harrison really stepped up and took their roles seriously! Those real life learning moments are often the ones that stick with them the most.

What a lovely idea :) I would never have thought of doing that. Hope Emily is feeling much better today.

Just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying the new site.
The community feed is brilliant, the blogs are really interesting to read and my children have been having great fun with the quizzes.
Everything feels much easier to use and it's lovely seeing other home educating families sharing ideas and support.
Thank you Steve for creating it!

We tried a nature study morning today and it worked so well. The kids collected leaves, sketched them, then looked up the trees they came from. Simple, calm and actually enjoyable.

How to keep learning logs simple

How does everyone keep learning logs simple without them becoming overwhelming? I want them useful, but not another full-time job.

I tend to write just a few sentences each day and add photos where possible. Much easier than trying to remember a whole week later.

We've been using BBC Bitesize quite a lot recently.

There are loads of free lessons, videos and interactive activities covering most subjects, and it's suitable for different age groups.

Definitely worth a look if you're looking for extra learning ideas or something to support a topic you're already studying.

My daughter completed her first full story today and was so proud of herself. Moments like this remind me why we chose home education.

Do you follow a timetable or take a more flexible approach to home education? We're somewhere in the middle and I'm always interested to hear what works for other families.

Hi Ben, we are more flexible though I do tend to get the children to do at least a couple of hours a day of Maths and English :)

Does anyone have any recommendations for science resources for a 10-year-old? We currently use YouTube and books but I'd love some hands-on ideas.

Welcome to the new HomeEdCafe!

I'm really pleased to finally launch the new version of the site, HomeEdUK has now become HomeEdCafe.
Alongside learning logs and summaries for you to keep a record of your childs learning activies, you'll now find community discussions, blogs, resources, quizzes and new ways to share ideas with other home educating families.

HomeEdCafe has been built to be a friendly, supportive place where families can ask questions, share experiences and discover useful resources together.

I hope you enjoy the new features.
