Finding What Works for Your Child

Hi everyone,

My name is Ben, and my wife and I have a 10 year old son who we decided to home educate earlier this year.

I stay at home due to health issues, while my wife works full time. Like most parents, we simply wanted our son to be happy and enjoy learning. Unfortunately, school just wasn't the right fit for him. He struggled to join in with the other children, never seemed truly settled, and over time we noticed that he was becoming increasingly unhappy.

Making the decision to take him out of school wasn't something we did lightly. We spent a lot of time discussing it as a family and wondering whether we were doing the right thing. Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions we've ever made.

Since leaving school, he's become a completely different child. He's happier, more confident, and actually enjoys learning again. The pressure and stress that seemed to follow him around have disappeared, and we're seeing his personality shine through in ways we hadn't seen for a long time.

One thing that surprised us was how quickly we stopped worrying about trying to recreate school at home. We don't follow a strict timetable and we don't have a rigid routine. Most days we'll spend a couple of hours covering the basics, usually maths and English, and then the rest of the day is guided by his interests.

At the moment, science is his favourite subject. We've bought him plenty of science books and he'll happily spend hours reading them. The best part is seeing him take what he's learned and try little experiments of his own. Watching that curiosity develop naturally has been amazing.

Another challenge we had at first was keeping records. I knew it was important, but I often found myself forgetting what we'd done or struggling to keep everything organised. That's when I found HomeEdUK.

Being able to quickly add journal entries each day has made life so much easier. Instead of trying to remember everything weeks later, I can simply record what we've done as we go along. I've been using the site for quite a while now and it's been a huge help.

Recently I've been watching all the new changes being added, including the community feed, questions, blogs and other features. It really feels like the site is growing into something that helps bring the home educating community together, which I think is fantastic.

If there's one thing I've learned through our journey so far, it's that home education doesn't have to look like school. Every child is different. For us, covering the basics like maths and English each day gives us a solid foundation, but after that we allow our son the freedom to explore what genuinely interests him.

Children are naturally curious. Sometimes the best learning happens when they're following their own interests rather than being forced into a timetable that doesn't suit them.

This approach might not be right for everyone, but it's working wonderfully for us, and our son is happier than he's ever been.

I hope sharing our story helps another family who might be considering home education or wondering if they're doing enough.

Thanks for reading.
