I'm a single parent and have been since my youngest son was just three months old - he's now 13. Life hasn't exactly been the easiest journey, but like most parents, you keep going and do your best every day.
For over 30 years, I worked in the vehicle recovery industry as a heavy rescue specialist. It was more than just a job; it was my life. But in January 2025, due to health reasons, I had to make the difficult decision to close my business.
Around the same time, my eldest son, who is now 15, was struggling at school. He was dealing with bullying, anxiety, and simply wasn't coping with day-to-day life in that environment. Watching that as a parent is incredibly hard.
After a lot of thought, I made the decision to take him out of school and begin our home education journey. My goal wasn't to recreate school at home. I simply wanted to give him a safer, calmer, and more supportive environment where he could learn without the pressures that had been affecting him so deeply.
Like many parents who begin homeschooling, I quickly discovered there was a lot more to it than just choosing what to learn each day. One thing I realised very early on was how useful it can be to keep records of learning. Whether it's learning logs, notes, photographs, activities, projects, or summaries, having a record of what your child has been doing can be incredibly valuable.
The problem was that writing things down here and there just didn't work.
A notebook would get misplaced. A photo would stay on my phone. An activity would be forgotten before I had chance to record it. Important details simply slipped through the cracks because life is busy and homeschooling parents already have enough to think about.
So I did what I've always done when faced with a problem.
I built something.
I created a simple, practical system that allowed me to log learning activities, keep everything organised, store photographs, and generate clean summaries whenever I needed them. Nothing complicated. Just something that worked.
The more I used it, the more I realised I couldn't possibly be the only parent facing these challenges.
That was the moment the idea for HomeEdCafe really began.
HomeEdCafe isn't just about keeping learning logs. It's about creating a place where home educating families can share ideas, ask questions, find inspiration, discover resources, and connect with others who understand the journey.
Home education can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you're just starting out. Having a supportive community can make all the difference.
Whether you're new to homeschooling, have been doing it for years, or are simply considering it as an option for your family, I hope HomeEdCafe becomes a place where you feel welcome.
Thank you for being here and for being part of the journey.
